This course will serve as an introduction to the known structure of the definable cardinals just beyond R / Q. For those more interested in ergodic theory than set theory, the course can also be viewed as an introduction to the countable Borel equivalence relations just beyond the measure-hyperfinite ones. The prerequisites for the course include a rudimentary knowledge of descriptive set theory and measure theory, as can be acquired from the lecture notes at http://www.logic.univie.ac.at/benjamin.miller/.
